What did the Google service center say about the issue? Won't they repair it for free?

No. They dismissed it as an out-of-warranty hardware failure, refusing a free repair and demanding I pay for a full screen replacement even though their update triggered it on a pristine phone. Avoid buying Pixel flagships if you expect long-term hardware reliability and good customer service. Also you won't get that much of exchange price compare to others
